Protected Quality

The excellence of the gastronomy of El Bierzo is granted by two factors that make it unique: the vast wealth of its gardens and orchards, and the character of its wines, made with local varieties el Godello and Mencía. All of them are protected as “quality figures”.
The Botillo
It is the most peculiar product and the main character in the gastronomy of this region. It is identified by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).It is prepared with pork pieces such as: rib, tail, backbone, shoulder, jaw and tongue.

Roasted peppers from El Bierzo
They are another symbol of this region identified by the PGI identity sign. Besides having many recipes, these are the perfect side dish for numerous meat and fish dishes. One of the most famous traditional dishes is the empanada, made out of typical bread from El Bierzo that is filled with ingredients such as: ham, boiled potato, chorizo, pepper and onion fritter to one’s liking.
The beef from El Bierzo
Its meat is pinkish and shiny, with white fat, slightly moist, consistent and with a tender texture. It is recognized as a Guarantee Mark.

Mencía red wines and Godello white wines
The product with the greatest reputation of El Bierzo is the wine with Qualified Designation of Origin. The grape used is the Mencía for red wines and Godello for white wines.
They are also relevant products the rennet Apple, the conference pear, the cherries and the chestnuts
